Hannes Vanlancker (b. 1987) is a music engraver, conductor and composer. He also works in artistic and educational coordination at dé Academie Ieper. In his practice, he connects the artistic with the pedagogical, meticulous craftsmanship with digital expertise, and the amateur music sector with the professional music field.
As a music engraver, Hannes is connected to Hal Leonard Europe and Huniyāgar vzw. Within Huniyāgar, he works with Diederik Glorieux on music engraving, music creation, digital workflows and artistic projects. In 2023 and 2024, he was a research associate within the Wim Henderickx Legacy project, which focused on preserving, organising, interpreting and further opening up musical heritage. Today, as assistant to Diederik Glorieux, he remains closely involved in engraving scores for the posthumous premieres of works by Wim Henderickx and in carrying forward his legacy.
As a conductor, he has worked with several wind bands, youth ensembles and choirs. His vision as a conductor starts from connection, trust, mastery and balance. Since 2016, he has been conductor of KHC Kunst naar Vermogen Moorsele. As a composer and arranger, he writes for a wide range of ensembles, with a particular focus on wind band, ensemble music and music tailored to the performers.
He studied music theory, music education and wind band conducting at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp. During his studies, he focused among other things on composition with Wim Henderickx and conducting with Dirk De Caluwé, Steven Verhaert and Jan Hadermann.
music engraver
Hannes Vanlancker (b. 1987) considers music notation a form of communication. A well engraved score does more than present the correct notes. It makes phrasing, breathing, structure, timing and musical intention readable.
Since 2011, he has been professionally active connected with Hal Leonard Europe as a music engraver, arranger and audiovisual designer, with a focus on band and ensemble publications. He is also active as a music engraver within Huniyāgar vzw, where he works with Diederik Glorieux on scores, projects and publications in which accuracy, readability and care for the intrinsic artistic character of each work are central.
His digital expertise covers music notation, audio, video, graphic design and digital publishing. He does not use this broad technical foundation as an end in itself, but as a way to make music easier to communicate, perform and access.
conductor
As a conductor, Hannes Vanlancker starts from connection. Between musicians, between score and performance, between ambition and feasibility, between technical craftsmanship and musical narrative.
He has worked as a conductor with Jeugdharmonie The Young Ones Tielt, the Roeselaars Jeugdensemble, Koor & Orkest Zanglust Tielt, Concertharmonie Crescendo Bissegem, Koninklijke Harmonie De Verenigde Vrienden Hooglede-Gits and Harmonie Concordia Wevelgem. Since 2016, he has been conductor of KHC Kunst naar Vermogen Moorsele, where he works with the orchestra on projects with substance, a warm ensemble sound and a clear sense of involvement among musicians, audience and the wider association.
In his rehearsal work, he looks for a balance between structure and trust. Good preparation, clear communication and attention to the people behind the music form the basis of this approach. Three ideas often return in his vision: implicit trust, mastery and balance. For him, trust means that musicians can rely on their preparation, on one another and on the conductor as a conduit between score and performance. Mastery is about knowing one’s own possibilities and taking responsibility within the section. Balance arises by listening to one another and by searching together for the right proportion between strength and subtlety, technique and emotion, the individual and the whole.
For him, musical quality is not created through refinement alone, but also through a shared story, a process supported by the whole group and the feeling that everyone takes responsibility for the whole.
composer
As a composer and arranger, Hannes writes for small and large ensembles, with a particular affinity for wind instruments, wind band and music within educational or community-oriented contexts.
His composition Trots for wind ensemble was a finalist in the Op weg naar het Nieuwjaarsconcert 2006 composition competition of the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble. In 2006, he was nominated by VerDi for Young Composer of the Year, and in 2008 he became laureate of the VerDi Keurmerk composition competition with Mijn Droom for solo flute. Works such as Parameter Brass, Fragments and Sinfonietta no. 1 also reflect his interest in clear form, expressive colour and idiomatic writing for performers.
In his arrangements, he always looks for the right balance between faithfulness to the original material and playability for the specific instrumentation. The score is not an endpoint, but a means to help performers make music with greater strength, freedom and awareness.
research and the legacy of Wim Henderickx
Hannes came into close contact with the music of Wim Henderickx at an early age. As a teenager, he attended the Musica composition courses in Neerpelt during the summers of 2003, 2004 and 2005, where he studied with Wim Henderickx and Diederik Glorieux. During his studies at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp, he studied composition with Wim Henderickx and immersed himself deeply in his work. What began as composition education grew into a lasting artistic and professional connection.
That connection later led to several arrangements, productions and collaborations around Henderickx’s music. From October 2023 to September 2024, Hannes contributed to the Wim Henderickx Legacy project. Within that project, the care for the artistic archive, the catalogue of works and the further accessibility of the oeuvre were central. The combination of musical analysis, knowledge of scores, digital organisation and practical craftsmanship closely matched his profile as a musician, engraver and research-oriented maker.
Today, as assistant to Diederik Glorieux, Hannes remains closely involved in engraving scores for the posthumous premieres of works by Wim Henderickx and in carrying forward his legacy. For Hannes, caring for heritage is not only about preserving what was there. It is also about understanding, passing on and setting it in motion again with care, so that music can continue to speak and resonate in future contexts.
artistic and educational coördination
Alongside his artistic practice, Hannes works in artistic and educational coordination at dé Academie Ieper. In this role, he contributes to the artistic and pedagogical development of the academy, its communication, organisation and further growth as a place where music, spoken word, visual arts and people can strengthen one another.
Previously, he was a music lecturer in the teacher training programme at VIVES Campus Tielt and taught at several academies. He has taught music theory, composition, arranging and instrumental conducting. In his pedagogical work, he combines precision of content with a strong belief in process, growth and trust.
He does not see education as the transfer of knowledge alone, but as the creation of an environment in which people learn to recognise, develop and share their own artistic voice.
Huniyāgar
In 2020, Hannes co-founded Huniyāgar vzw together with Diederik Glorieux. Within Huniyāgar, several lines of his work come together: music creation, music engraving, education, digital support and artistic collaboration.
The organisation focuses on projects in which care for the score, imagination, performance practice and artistic transmission reinforce one another. For Hannes, Huniyāgar is a place where craftsmanship and creation go hand in hand, and where the distance between creator, performer, publisher and audience becomes smaller.
education
Hannes Vanlancker studied at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in music theory, a master’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in wind band conducting. During his studies, he studied composition and analysis with Wim Henderickx, analysis with Frank Agsteribbe, music theory with Alain Craens, wind band conducting with Dirk De Caluwé, Steven Verhaert and Jan Hadermann, counterpoint with Peter Thomas and horn with Rik Vercruysse.
This combination of theory, pedagogy, composition, conducting and practice still forms the basis of his work: thinking precisely, communicating clearly and bringing people together through music.
